Tips for Getting Your Kids to Brush Their Teeth

Whether your child is a toddler, a teenager, or somewhere in-between, it can feel frustrating when your child doesn’t listen to you. Even the sweetest little munchkins can have a stubborn side and resist your well-intentioned instruction and guidance! One common struggle, for example, is encouraging your child to brush their teeth. Here are some tips you can try to get your child on board with a healthy at-home dental routine.

  1. Let Them Choose Their Supplies
  2. One way to make brushing more appealing for your child is to let them choose a toothbrush and toothpaste they like. Although you need to make sure that the toothbrush and toothpaste are appropriate for their age, there are many colorful options available at the store or online. Picking dental tools that feature their favorite color or movie character can get them more excited to use them!

  3. Make It a Bonding Activity
  4. Your child may have more fun if you brush your teeth together instead of brushing being something they have to do alone. Copying what you are doing with your toothbrush can help them stay more engaged in cleaning their teeth.

  5. Create a Sticker or Star Chart
  6. Sticker charts can help your child remember to brush their teeth. Give them a sticker every time they brush their teeth in the morning and at night. Allowing them to earn a little prize or special experience at the end of the week or month can add some extra motivation.

  7. Pick a Toothbrushing Song
  8. Perhaps your child is willing to brush twice a day without much of a fight but they have a hard time brushing long enough. Two minutes each time is the standard recommendation, which can feel like an eternity for a young child. Play a fun, upbeat song that lasts for two minutes to encourage your child to brush until the music is done.

  9. Read Kids’ Dental Books at Bedtime
  10. In your reading rotation, include some books that teach about the importance of dental health. These books can help your child learn why they should take the time to clean their teeth every day instead of just feeling like they’re being forced to do it because you said so.
